Updated: Jan 8, 2021

Indian food has officially become one of the fastest growing segments of the culinary world in recent years. More Americans have had some sort of exposure to the cuisine known for its diverse range of ingredients; tongue tickling flavors, and health benefits.

There continues to be lots of misconceptions out there about Indian food. We know what you’re thinking: how could something so delicious be so misunderstood?

From London to Dubai, Bangkok to Brunswick, you can find an Indian restaurant just about anywhere these days. Bombay Mahal in Brunswick, Maine has been cooking up some of India's most famous dishes for its customers for over 30 years.

Here are 5 common misconceptions people have about Indian food:

1) Indian food is too hot & way too spicy

Spicy doesn’t have to mean hot! There are certain spices that add heat to a dish, but there are also spices that simply add rich depth & flavor. Many Indian dishes are not “spicy” as many people believe. Savory, sweet and tangy dishes are just as common across regions various of India. Bombay Mahal caters to the needs to its customers from offering a mild, medium, or hot range when ordering.

2) Indian food doesn’t cater to vegetarians & vegans

This is another massive misconception. India is the largest vegetarian country in the world with one of the most elaborate vegetarian and vegan diets in the world. Be sure to read more about the 5 best Indian vegetarian dished in a previous post here.

3) Indian food is unhealthy

Just like any cuisine and diet you follow, there are healthy and not-so-healthy options. That being stated, in general Indian food is a healthy option. This is especially true when compared to other take out and fast food options. Indian cuisine uses an abundance of fresh vegetables and spices which are packed with nutrients.

4) All Indian food is all the same

Often many folks haven’t experienced Indian food in depth and assume curry is the only type of Indian food Indians eat. This is often because curry is the most familiar 'buzz word' in the western world. Bombay Mahal encourages you to branch out and try items you’ve never had (or maybe never even heard of) before.

5) There is no good Indian Food near me

If you live in Maine you are wrong! Bombay Mahal located in the quintessential New England college town of Brunswick, Maine has been serving up award winning Indian dishes for 30 years! Check them out if you haven't already!
